James Ward

Managing Director, Head of Research and Development and Founder


James Ward has a background in Software Engineering and academic research in Computer Science, having been an active researcher in the Simulation and Visualization Research Group at the University of Hull for some 13 years. His research interests are related to computer graphics, virtual environments, visualization, and development of novel applications of these. His current research interests include radiotherapy, interventional radiology, archaeological visualization and behavioural research. Previous major research projects include a virtual environment trainer for knee arthroscopy surgery, an image guided robotic system for performing osteotomy surgery of the knee joint and a flight simulator for a paraglider.

He played a key role in establishing the Hull Immersive Visualization Environment (HIVE) which provides state of the art visualization facilities for the University. He is the main technology adviser for HIVE and has over 40 research publications. He won the Medipex Yorkshire and Humber Innovation Award in 2006 for his work on the virtual training system for radiotherapy, and the Eurographics award for Visual Computing in Medicine in 2011.

Professor Andy Beavis

Radiotherapy Director, Chief Science Officer and Founder.


Prof Andrew Beavis has worked in the NHS, as a clinical Radiotherapy Physicist, since 1992 having gained a PhD at Newcastle University in Solid State Physics. He is a Consultant Medical Physicist and Head of Radiation Physics for the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, based at the exciting new Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham, Hull. He holds several honorary positions reflecting his contribution at various academic institutions. These are: Visiting Professor at Sheffield Hallam University, Hon Professor at the University of Hull and Hon Senior Reader at The Hull-York Medical School.

Professional qualifications include Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, Member of the Institute of Physics, Chartered Physicist and Chartered Scientist.

He is a member of the National Radiotherapy Implementation Group which leads and monitors National strategy for Radiotherapy on behalf of the National Cancer Action Team.

In 2009, in recognition of his work developing the VERT system he was awarded the IPEM's Manufacturers Award and the DOH's Chief Science Officers Innovation and Technology Award.

Arthur Kay

Director of International Sales and Marketing

akfinalAn International Sales and Marketing Executive with global senior management experience in the high technology medical equipment market, Arthur is currently Director of International Sales and Marketing at Vertual Ltd. He is also a Board member at Vision RT Ltd and a Trustee of the College of radiographers. In 2011 Arthur was awarded honorary membership of the Royal College of Radiologists in recognition of his work in enhancing radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer throughout the world. He has also been awarded a Fellowship of the Institute of Directors. From 1989 until 2004 Arthur held the post of Director of International Marketing at Varian Medical Systems, the world's largest radiotherapy manufacturer. During this time he was a key participant in growing Varian's Oncology business from two major product lines with a turnover of £120 million in 1989 to five major product lines and a turnover of more than £500 million. Prior to that, he spent fifteen years with Philips Oncology Systems where he was Director of Philips North American radiotherapy business in 1988.
